You Don’t Build a Strong Life Without Building a Strong Mind
33 years ago, I didn’t set out to “do personal development.”
I wasn’t searching for mindset.
I wasn’t chasing success.
I was a young, naive single mum in a small town, raising children, doing my best, and living a life that, at the time, felt very small.
I hadn’t travelled.
I hadn’t seen what was possible.
I hadn’t been exposed to people who thought differently.
But I felt it.
That quiet, persistent thought:
There has to be more than this.
Not more things.
More possibility.
More life.
More for my children than what I had experienced.
The truth is I didn’t know what I wanted yet.
But I knew what I was living didn’t feel aligned.
And that discomfort became the starting point.
What I didn’t realise at the time was this:
That decision was the beginning of self-leadership.
Not leading others.
👉 Leading myself first.
Where It Started – A Door I Didn’t Know Existed
My introduction came through cassette tapes and books.
At the time, my mother-in-law worked in sales. She was exposed to a different way of thinking, a different way of living and I could see it.
She spoke differently.
She carried herself differently.
She had a level of confidence and vision I had never experienced before.
I remember watching her and thinking:
“How is that even possible?”
That question stayed with me.
Not long after, I was given a set of tapes by Jim Rohn.
I would listen to them in the car.
Driving. Replaying. Listening again.
And something shifted.
It wasn’t motivation.
It wasn’t a temporary high.
👉 It was hunger.
A deep desire to understand:
- how people change their thinking
- how they change their circumstances
- how they create a different life
For the first time, I realised:
The way I was thinking was shaping the life I was living.
The Work Most People Never Commit To
From that point on, I made a decision even if I didn’t fully understand it at the time:
I would invest in myself.
Not once.
Not when it was convenient.
But consistently.
I read.
I listened.
I attended seminars.
I surrounded myself with ideas that expanded my thinking.
I was introduced to Christopher Howard and became deeply immersed in NLP.
This wasn’t just interesting — it was confronting.
Because when you start to understand the mind, you also start to see:
👉 where you’ve been limiting yourself
👉 where your beliefs have been shaped by your environment
👉 where your identity has been built on survival, not possibility
In 2008, I attended Unleash the Power Within and walked across fire.
That wasn’t about walking on hot coals.
It was about proving something to myself:
Your mind will either stop you or carry you.
In 2009, I became an NLP Practitioner.
In 2020, I completed my Master Practitioner certification.
Not because I needed another qualification.
But because I had become committed to understanding how to create change — not just hope for it.
The Part No One Warns You About
Here’s the reality most people don’t say out loud:
⚠️ When you start to grow, not everyone will come with you.
When you think differently, you challenge the environment around you.
When you set new standards, it can make others uncomfortable.
And if you don’t have a strong internal foundation, you will shrink back to fit where you started.
I saw this early.
And I made a decision:
👉 I would not stay small to make others comfortable.
Mental Strength Is Built Before You Need It
In 2012, I made the decision to complete the Kokoda Track.
This was not a holiday.
This was not a casual challenge.
This was one of the most physically and mentally demanding experiences I have ever undertaken.
The heat.
The terrain.
The exhaustion.
And then there is “the Wall.”
People think it’s a physical climb.
It’s not.
👉 It’s a mental negotiation with yourself.
Every step requires a decision:
- keep going
- or stop
Without a strong mind, I would not have made it.
Kokoda taught me something most people never experience:
Leadership is not about titles.
👉 It is about the decisions you make when everything in you wants to stop.
That is where self-leadership is built.
During that journey, I had the honour of being present at the 75th Anniversary at Isurava Memorial, where I laid a wreath.
That moment grounded everything.
Because it reminded me:
Strength, resilience, and endurance are not built in the moment.
They are built long before the moment arrives.
The Camino 860 Kilometres of Self-Leadership
In 2020, just before the world changed, I turned 50.
And I made another decision.
I walked 860 kilometres across Spain on the Camino de Santiago.
33 days.
No shortcuts.
No skipping the hard days.
No outsourcing the effort.
Just me, the path, and my mind.
Every day required:
- discipline
- emotional regulation
- resilience
- self-leadership
There were days I was exhausted.
Days I questioned why I was doing it.
Days where stopping would have been easier.
But I didn’t stop.
Because I had trained my mind to keep going even when it was uncomfortable.
That is self-leadership in its purest form.
No audience.
No validation.
No external pressure.
Just a standard you hold yourself to regardless of how you feel.
What Personal Development Really Is
Personal development is not:
❌ hype
❌ motivation
❌ consuming content and hoping something changes
👉 It is training.
It is repetition.
It is choosing growth over comfort again and again.
It is building:
- resilience when things don’t go to plan
- clarity when things feel uncertain
- confidence through action, not validation
- belief through evidence, not wishful thinking
It’s the ability to keep going when no one is watching.
The 5 Pillars of Self-Leadership Through Personal Development
Over the years, I’ve come to understand that personal development is not random.
It follows a pattern.
It builds in layers.
And at its core, self-leadership is developed through five key pillars:
1. Awareness
Understanding how you think, what you believe, and how your environment has shaped you.
2. Decision-Making
Choosing growth even when it’s uncomfortable, and making decisions aligned with where you want to go.
3. Emotional Regulation
Managing your emotions so they don’t control your actions, especially in difficult moments.
4. Discipline
Taking consistent action regardless of how you feel.
5. Identity Shift
Becoming the person capable of creating the life you want, not just wishing for it.
The Cost of Avoiding the Work
If you don’t do the work, nothing changes.
You stay:
- in the same environment
- with the same thinking
- with the same results
Even when you feel it:
This isn’t the life I want.
I didn’t always know what I wanted.
But I knew what I was living:
- didn’t feel right
- didn’t feel aligned
- didn’t feel like the life I was capable of
And that awareness — even without clarity — was enough to begin.
What This Work Has Given Me
Personal development didn’t just “help me feel better.”
It gave me:
✔️ The ability to make decisions when things are uncertain
✔️ The resilience to rebuild when life doesn’t go to plan
✔️ The confidence to step into opportunities I once believed were out of reach
✔️ The awareness to choose a different path even when it’s harder
It opened doors I didn’t know existed.
And more importantly:
👉 It gave me the capacity to walk through them.
Personal Development Is Not Optional
Let me be clear:
Personal development is not optional if you want a different life.
Because without it:
- you repeat patterns
- you stay where you are
- you wait for change instead of creating it
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You just need to decide:
I am no longer staying where I am.
If This Resonates With You
This is for you if:
- you feel stuck
- you know there is more
- you are ready to change, but don’t know where to start
You don’t need the full plan.
You need the first step.
This is why I do what I do today.
Because personal development is not just growth.
👉 It is the foundation of leadership.
And every person who wants a different life must first learn how to lead themselves.
