When You Sit Still, Your Body Speaks
When you sit still long enough, your body speaks the truth. It’s not there to punish you or throw your life into chaos. It’s there to guide you back home to yourself, back to your clarity, back to the life you actually want. Your body speaks through whispers at first: a tight chest, a heaviness, a fog you can’t shake, a feeling you’re out of alignment. And when you finally stop long enough to listen, those whispers turn into wisdom.
As a mother of four, a grandmother, a leader, and the founder of The Resilience Movement, you might assume I’ve always known how to take care of myself. But my truth is the same truth many women carry: I learned the hard way. I learned through depletion, burnout, and decades of putting myself last. I spent years being everything for everyone until I wasn’t anything for myself.
I grew up believing that strength meant pushing. That resilience meant keeping it together. That self-sacrifice was noble. That asking for help or slowing down meant I was failing. So I hustled through motherhood, through work, through starting over, through heartbreak and reinvention. I didn’t sit still. I didn’t pause. I didn’t breathe. And because I never stopped, I never listened. I didn’t understand that resilience isn’t about enduring it’s about aligning. It’s about honouring the messages your body sends before they become screams.
When You Sit Still – Stillness Is Where Your Body Speaks the Loudest
Stillness is confronting. Stillness strips away distraction. Stillness leaves you face-to-face with what’s real. And for many of us, that’s the exact reason we avoid it. But the truth is this: your body speaks most clearly when you give it space. When you stop micromanaging your life. When you stop pretending you’re fine. When you stop pushing through.
In the quiet moments the ones I avoided for most of my life your body will tell you everything you need to know: what is draining you, what is hurting you, what is no longer aligned, and what needs to change. And when your body speaks, it’s not highlighting your weakness. It’s pointing you toward the life that will strengthen you.
When I finally allowed myself a moment of stillness, I realised how much I had been carrying. Not just stress, but emotional residue from years of pushing, surviving, and holding everyone else up. It wasn’t a breakdown. It was a revelation. Awareness didn’t feel heavy it felt liberating. Because once you see the truth, you can’t unsee it. And once your body speaks, you can’t pretend you didn’t hear it.
The Moment My Body Forced Me to Listen
I didn’t choose stillness. My body made the choice for me.
I got shingles.
Let me tell you shingles isn’t subtle, It doesn’t whisper, It demands your attention. I had ignored every sign: the exhaustion, the tension, the emotional heaviness, the feeling that I was misaligned. I kept saying, “I’ll slow down later.”
So my body said, “No. You’ll slow down now.”
The pain was intense. The fatigue was overwhelming. But more than anything, it was the emotional shock that woke me up. My body wasn’t betraying me. It was protecting me from a life I could no longer sustain. It was forcing me to stop before I ended up in a much darker place. Shingles became my circuit breaker.
When your body speaks loudly, it’s not the beginning of a breakdown it’s the beginning of a breakthrough.
That experience became one of the most defining turning points of my life. I had no choice but to rest. No choice but to listen. No choice but to rebuild from a place of deep honesty. And for the first time in a long time, I asked myself: “What have I been pretending not to know?”
When Your Body Speaks: It Knows Before You Do
Before your mind catches up, your body already knows the truth. It knows when you’re safe, and it knows when you’re not. It knows when a relationship is wrong, when a workplace is unhealthy, when a dream is too small for you, and when your nervous system is running on fumes. Your mind can rationalise anything but your body can’t be lied to.
In recent years, I walked through one of the most stressful workplace experiences of my life. And though I won’t name details, I will say this: my body knew long before I admitted it. The anxiety. The hypervigilance. The sense of being unsafe. The way I felt myself slowly disappearing. My body spoke every single day, but I didn’t want to hear it not until I was forced to.
But here’s the empowering truth: that experience didn’t diminish me. It clarified me. It sharpened what I value: psychological safety, integrity, meaningful work, and environments where people are treated with humanity. It also became the catalyst for my eBook Navigating a Toxic Workplace and my podcast episode on how to stay resilient in a toxic workplace.
I didn’t create those from theory. I created them from lived experience, and from the inner knowing that when your body speaks even through pain it is trying to tell you what your spirit already knows.
Listening Is an Act of Self-Leadership
Most people think self-care is bubble baths and scented candles. It’s not. Self-care is discipline. Self-care is boundaries. Self-care is listening to your body when it says “This is too much.” Self-care is leadership the leadership of your own life.
When your body speaks, and you actually listen, everything in your life begins to improve:
- Your clarity increases because you stop ignoring the truth.
- Your energy rises because you stop fighting yourself.
- Your confidence strengthens because you start choosing what honours you.
- Your decisions become more aligned because you stop abandoning yourself.
- Your boundaries become healthier because you refuse to tolerate anything less.
- Your vision becomes sharper because your mind and body finally agree on the direction.
The deeper you heal, the more powerful you become for the people you serve. You cannot lead others into places you are unwilling to go. And if you’re exploring your own growth, you may also enjoy my article Confidence to Strength.
Healing Is Not About the Past It’s About the Future
Healing isn’t about revisiting old wounds endlessly. It’s about clearing what stands between you and the future you’re trying to create. When your body speaks through tension, fatigue, anxiety, or illness it’s showing you where your attention is needed so you can move forward with clarity.
Healing is a bridge, not a destination. It’s the work that creates the emotional, physical, and spiritual space for you to step into the next version of your life. When your body speaks and you listen, you stop repeating cycles and start building futures.
A Step Toward the Life I’m Creating
Today, I’m choosing breathwork as one of the tools to release what my body has been holding. Not because I am broken. Not because I need fixing. But because I am committed to my evolution. Committed to my peace. Committed to the life I’m building next.
Breathwork is a tool but the decision to choose myself is the transformation. Every step toward healing is a step toward my future self, the woman I am becoming, the woman who leads with clarity, conviction, and deep self-trust.
When You Listen, You Lead Your Life Forward
If you’re reading this and feeling a pull that tug in your chest, that heaviness in your belly, that deep knowing that something needs to change please trust it. That is your body speaking to you. Not to shame you or scare you, but to guide you back to the version of yourself you’ve been longing to return to.
You are allowed to slow down. You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to choose differently. You are allowed to create a life that nourishes you. And from that place? You become unstoppable.
When your body speaks, it’s not holding you back it’s calling you forward. And when you listen, you rise.
