Reclaiming Your Identity – When Life Isn’t the Same Anymore

Reclaiming Your Identity: Finding the New You

There are moments in life when we look around and barely recognise who we are anymore. Maybe it’s after the kids leave home. Maybe it’s after a divorce. Maybe it’s waking up one day in a career you once loved, now feeling like you’re wearing someone else’s shoes.

You’re not broken.
You’re just between versions of yourself.

And here’s something most people won’t say out loud: it’s okay to not know who you are right now.

I’ve been there. And what I’ve learned is this reclaiming your identity is one of the most powerful journeys you’ll ever take.

🌍 I Walked 860km to Find Myself

In 2019, I did something bold. Something confronting.
I walked 860 kilometres across Spain on the Camino de Santiago.

No makeup. No fancy clothes. No job title.
Just me, my backpack, my aching feet and a deep desire to let go of every label I’d ever carried.

That journey wasn’t just physical. It was emotional. Soulful. Sacred.
Every step gave me space to sit in silence. To cry. To reflect.
And for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t Donna the wife. Or Donna the business owner. Or Donna the fixer.

I was just… me.
And that was enough.

🚨 Why We Lose Ourselves

Most of us don’t even realise it’s happening.

We’re busy living for others meeting deadlines, raising families, being strong for everyone else.
And slowly, the things that made us… us… fade into the background:

  • That creative spark 🔥

  • The joy of something that’s just yours 🌸

  • The dreams you had before life got complicated 🌈

We wake up one day and think,
“Where did I go?”

💡 What If Change Isn’t the Enemy?

Change is often seen as disruption something to survive.
But what if we saw change as a creative process instead?

As Laurie Buchanan said,

“Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing.”

Let that land.
Because if you don’t choose change consciously, you end up living by default stuck in a version of life that doesn’t fit anymore.

That’s not your destiny.
That’s just conditioning.

Reclaiming your identity is the conscious act of choosing again with intention, not obligation.

🧭 How to Start Reclaiming Your Identity

Let’s be real: this isn’t about burning it all down and starting from scratch.
It’s about:

  • Coming back to yourself

  • Peeling off the layers that no longer serve you

  • Choosing who you want to become next

Here’s how I began and how you can too:

1. Sit With the Silence

Don’t rush to fill the gap. That gap is fertile ground.
Clarity often lives on the other side of stillness.

2. Grieve Who You Were

Even outdated versions of ourselves deserve closure.
Grieve her. Thank her. She got you here.

3. Reconnect With Joy

Ask yourself: what lights you up now?
Not what used to what does today?
List five things. Let it be messy.

4. Make Tiny, Aligned Choices

You don’t need a five-year plan.
You need one brave decision that feels honest.

5. Speak to Yourself With Kindness

You are becoming someone new.
Be patient with the in-between.

6. Let the Shift Shape You

This is where your soul expands.
Let it be a becoming not a breakdown.

💛 A Message From One Woman to Another

You don’t have to walk across a country to begin reclaiming your identity.

But you do need to walk back toward your truth.

And sometimes that means:

  • Saying no to what drains you

  • Leaving the titles and expectations behind

  • Rebuilding at your own pace — without rushing

You are allowed to:

  • Change your mind

  • Redefine what success means

  • Choose something softer, slower, and truer

Your identity isn’t lost.
She’s just waiting under all the layers of who you were told to be.
